Flowery

Flower Inn, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka: A Recommendation

In the little village of Sigiriya, there are only few guest houses to choose from. A little path from the village street at the base of the rock leads to the "Flower Inn", managed by the two friendly sisters Preethi and Nilu. The house offers several rooms. I stayed at the room facing the front with direct access to the terrace. The room was airy, bright, spacious and clean. The sheets and towel were spotless.

Straight away, I found contact to many other travelers. Everyone is here for the same reason: to climb the rock. The garden is bursting of flowers and Preethi will be happy to give a tour. Lots of wildlife crosses the garden: monkey families munching on the fresh leaves and dancing on the roofs, giant squirrels balancing on the power lines (at first I thought it was a fox!), and the occasional snake. We were made aware that wild elephants are around, therefore after dark one should not wander beyond the village. We are in the middle of the jungle after all!

The dinner around 7.30pm attracts many other visitors. A choice of good spicy and non-spicy curries are served. Other food, lots of fruit, and drinks are available on the main road. Staying in Sigiriya has the advantage of starting the early morning climb directly from here. The tranquility of the village due to its remote location comes with the disadvantage of a missing bus connection to/from Habarana; one has to go via Dambulla to transfer.
