Devi

Devi Tourist Home, Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka: A Recommendation

Another pleasant place to stay, just south of town. The friendly couple offered a free pick-up from the bus station in town. The guest house is in a quiet street. In the morning, I enjoyed observing the birds surrounding the area, each chirping a different melody. The rooms are small but clean with too short of a bed, even for me! The room came with no frills (no towel, soap, extra sheet, toilet paper). The food is good, especially their banana rotti for breakfast and their thick vegetable soup for dinner. Prices were as always higher than at local restaurants. Tea and water are very expensive! Though the family was very friendly, they were persistently targeting their guests to sell extra services: within less than 48 hours, we were offered an overpriced safari trip, a wooden mask factory excursion, and a driving service to Batticola for only 6,000 Rs - which equals 5 nights stay at their guest house!). That left the unfortunate impression that it was all about making money and that this guest house is part of the wider network of businesses thriving on commissions. Recommendable, but be aware!
